Januarie York is a published author and poet based in Indianapolis, IN. She was named the Center for Black Literature and Culture’s first Poet Laureate in 2020. Her poetry addresses community upliftment, women's inspiration, and sensory engagement related to human experiences. Januarie has released two spoken word albums, several books of poetry, and maintains a digital magazine (LiT Magazine) and a blog (The I Is Never Silent).
Her work includes curating events, acting, and collaborating with incarcerated youth and adults. In 2024, she published a book of poetry titled “What the Bars Can’t Break”, dedicated to her work in the prison system. Januarie has organized various community healing events that combine different art forms like poetry and photography to engage audiences and build long-term relationships. Events such as “Crown Heal”, “The LiT Ball”, and “BREAD” have provided gathering spaces for attendees to create memories and connections.
In 2021, she obtained a Master’s Degree in Positive Psychology and published “Black Light”, a mental health workbook integrating Black culture, positive psychology, and poetry. That same year, she released her first full collection of poetry and essays entitled, "nomaD", published through VK Press, a Black, woman owned publishing company.
She currently works with “The Learning Tree” organization in Indianapolis, as a creative consultant and director, promoting community through creative initiatives. Januarie has collaborated with hospitals, schools, organizations, Longansport Juvenile, Marion County Community Corrections, and public protests in Indianapolis. She contributed a poem for the permanent mural honoring Madame CJ Walker and commemorated cyclist Major Taylor in the State Museum’s exhibit about his life. She is also featured in the documentary “Champion of the Race” produced by Tom Gould. Her company, AJYSITUATION, creates events focused on mental health, arts, and personal well-being.
